"Nobody really had any big dreams when I was a kid. Nobody thought that they were going to be anything other than what their father was; nobody ever shot for the stars, so to speak. I sorta retreated into my own fantasy world. You have to to kinda survive. Because if your ideas are bigger than the town you’re in, then you’ve got to get out of there. There’s no nurturing for those kind of ideas in a small town like that."

"Lyrically, I wanted to get away from writing in ‘jive talk’. On our old records I had this slang that was sort of early Springsteen-eese, Central Jersey slang, and poor grammar. I ran out of steam with what I used to do, and the only thing left was what I am right now, so that’s what I wrote about. I went straight for the point and tried to be as precise as I could be."

"There’s a lot to be said about bands. Bands are always being criticized for like… ‘That band’s cheesy’ or ‘That band’s not cheesy.’
… Somebody asked me what do I think of All Time Low or Family Fourty-Five (?)… or one of the bands… Oh! It was Forever The Sickest Kids.
And they were like, ‘Don’t you hate that band because of their hair and their blah blah blah…?’
And I was like, ‘Why would I hate them? What does anything that they do have to do with me in my life?
Nothing.’
If I don’t want to listen to them, I just don’t. But if I do, I do.
And why would I not want them to succeed? It doesn’t affect my band at all. I hope that they succeed, good for them.
There’s kids that don’t like my band and they need something to listen to too, so, listen to these bands.
Because your hair is different than me? Come on… like, I don’t care.
If that’s what you wanna do, wear what you dig, man.
That’s what Benny says…"

"I think the music did the same thing, stripped away all the extra bits that didn’t need to be there. We looked to the things we loved collectively rather than me steering the music into just my kind of music. The thing we agree on is the 70’s rock bands like the Who, and Led Zepplin, and 90’s music, like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Some of the songs even have a Neil Young vibe from when he went electric."

"What this song is about, is meeting someone and having a crush on them, but really in your mind at the end of the song you’ll see it’s like, “I’m serious and if you die before I die, I’m gonna die too."

"When I played with him [at Hyde Park] … I didn’t pick No Surrender to sing; he picked it. And I didn’t ask what part to sing; he told me to sing the second verse. Now, my brother-in-law is in our band – he’s the bass player – and his sister is my wife, so when No Surrender says, ‘I hear your sister’s voice calling us home/Across the open yards/Well maybe we’ll cut some place of our own/With these drums and these guitars’ – that was like my whole life. When I got to go up there in front of 100,000 people, it was just like, for the first time in my life I’m getting to tell you what is real to me. It was almost like a religious experience. My whole upbringing, you just get kicked and kicked and kicked by life. You’re not good enough. You’re not going to make the schools. You’re not going to have a good job. That’s what our lives would have been if we didn’t do this. And then for one time, for that one moment, I felt that we took it back. We were like, ‘No, we can have something of our own – and so can you. Bruce is giving it to me – maybe I can give it to you.’ That moment, that singular five seconds, I’ll never forget for my entire life. The E Street Band could have not been there; everyone could have not been there. That line he wrote was, to me, bigger than anything that was going on that day."

"You may not be the reason that I started playing, but you are certainly part of the reason why I continue."

"I deal with like a really serious case of, uh, I have a panic disorder. It’s really bad and a lot of times I can’t talk sometimes. ‘Cause I get really shaky and I feel like sick to my stomach and stuff like that. And everybody seems real far away. And I’ve been dealing with it since I was a kid. [to audience member] Now’s not the time to tell your story. I’m trying to relate something to my friends here. So it’s really hard for me, and it leads to a lot of, like, you get depressed about it because you can’t understand why you’re not normal. I know that my thinking is normal but like when you have these kind of episodes, it’s really difficult to focus on anything. And there was one show where I’ll never forget, where we were playing a festival in Austria and I was having, like I came on stage and I was having one of these panic attacks. It was freaking me out and I don’t have any medicine for it ‘cause I don’t drink and I don’t take drugs and it’s harder to deal with it. Even my doctor’s like “dude, smoke a little weed” and I’m like “no, no”. You know what I mean though. But I remember I was having this horrible panic attack and I was like I don’t know if I can finish these songs, my hands are shaking. And there was a girl who hung up a sign. It was a joke and she just said “Brian, I undress you with my eyes” and it actually made me feel better and it helped me get through the set."

"This record is a good revenge record like: if you’re bummed on somebody they left you - you know a girl or a guy, I don’t know what you kids date these days… Gorillas, monkeys, whatever — whatever you want - hey I don’t care, I got something to do… but I would date a panda bear though, they’re cute!"

"The one thing that really pisses me off is when girls come up and they are like “Sign my boobs!” Literally every single time I’ve said “You go home, you get some self respect, and then we’ll have a real conversation.” Then I leave, because I’m not going to be that guy. Even if I wasn’t married, it’s just not right."

Brian Fallon (via thedronesallslaveaway)

"I steal Bruce Springsteen’s seventies moves, but he steals Van Morrison’s seventies moves, and there’s a really hilarious clip on YouTube where you find a grumpy old Van Morrison and they ask him: “What do you think of Bruce Springsteen?” because Born to Run just came out, and he goes: [Mimics grumpy old Van Morrison.] “Bruce Springsteen? He steals my moves. My seventies moves.” And he says it just like that, and he’s all fat and gross and it’s so funny. But yeah, I totally steal. If you watch the London Hammersmith concert, my most stolen move is in “10th Avenue Freeze Out.” He swings his arms and claps while he’s swinging his arms. That’s my most stolen move. But I know Bruce well enough to tell him I steal them. And he’s like [in Springsteen rasp], “Look, you took from me, and now my son’s taking from you. It all comes full circle.” That’s how he says it. I do impressions on the weekends."

"And it’s horrible, but it tells you all these stupid things that we chase around in life, it just doesn’t matter. So like, why don’t you go fishing instead? Make sure you write that in there, that I was fishing. For bass. For sea bass. But it’s a small boat. Make sure you write it’s a small boat, because I don’t want people to think I’m on a yacht, ‘cause I got cred to keep, you know? You can write that in there, too, that I said I got cred to keep."

"It’s nice to work with people that really appreciate your band because they like the music, not because they think they can make money of off it. Which is always a good feeling. I think big business is scary."
